چکیده
PIER: Internet Scale P2P Query Processing with Distributed Hash Tables by Ryan Jay Huebsch Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science University of California, Berkeley Professor Joseph M. Hellerstein, Chair Distributed database systems have long been a topic of interest in the database research community. Existing designs focus on two principles; make the distribution transparent to users and provide a rich declarative query language with strict semantic guarantees. As a result, they have modest targets for network scalability with none of these systems being deployed on much more than a handful of distributed sites. The Internet community has recently become interested in distributed query processing. Not surprisingly, they approach this problem from a very different angle than the traditional database literature. The fundamental goal of Internet systems is to operate at very large scale (thousands if not millions of nodes). To achieve this degrees of scale, these system sacrifice transparency and/or flexibility. This thesis develops a system called PIER (which stands for “Peer-to-Peer Information Exchange and Retrieval”) which provides a rich query language that provides location transparency and scalability with relaxed semantics. We explore the architecture of PIER, develop techniques for query processing (with specific focus on aggregation and join operations), and finally examine an optimization problem with multiple simultaneous aggregation queries. Analyzing P2P Overlays with Recursive Queries
We explore the utility and execution of recursive queries as an interface for querying distributed network graph structures. To illustrate the power of recursive queries, we give several examples of computing structural properties of a P2P network such as reachability and resilience. To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal, we sketch execution strategies for these queries using PIER, a P...
متن کاملDesign of Saturn Architecture Over DHT Data System
A large-scale network is one in which the automated network systems must be able to manage the network as a single entity rather than managing individual connections between networks. A large scale network consists of an overall architecture. An overlay architecture is used to improve internet routing and quality of service guarantees to achieve higher quality streaming media. The existing over...
متن کاملAmbientDB: Relational Query Processing in a P2P Network
A new generation of applications running on a network of nodes, that share data on an ad-hoc basis, will benefit from data management services including powerful querying facilities. In this paper, we introduce the goals, assumptions and architecture of AmbientDB, a new peer-to-peer (P2P) DBMS prototype developed at CWI. Our focus is on the query processing facilities of AmbientDB, that are bas...
متن کاملEnhancing P2P File-Sharing with an Internet-Scale Query Processor
In this paper, we address the problem of designing a scalable, accurate query processor for peerto-peer filesharing and similar distributed keyword search systems. Using a globally-distributed monitoring infrastructure, we perform an extensive study of the Gnutella filesharing network, characterizing its topology, data and query workloads. We observe that Gnutella’s query processing approach pe...
متن کاملBuilding an Internet-Scale Service For Publishing and Locating XML Documents on PlanetLab
In recent years, there has been a growing interest for peer-to-peer (P2P) based computing and applications. One of the important challenges in P2P environments is to quickly locate relevant data across many participating peers. In this regard, Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) are a popular solution for building large scale distributed applications due to their scalability, load balancing and faul...
